WASTE
When we speak of waste, we are really talking about what used to be called waste. Nationwide, we have adopted the separation of waste into green waste, recyclables, and general trash. Without getting into the discussion of the various levels of recycling performed by various municipalities, we thought we were close to achieving a zero waste condition at the residential level, and through legislation and education we may get there by limiting use of non-recyclable items. There are several measures that can be used for on-site waste treatment that supplement the municipal efforts to recycle and make use of various types of waste. The most basic is composting or biodigesting food and garden waste.
OUR PLAN
We use compost to amend soils for gardening, which provides fertilizer for plant growth. In addition, biodigesters have become available for home use. The biodigester uses anaerobic digestion, as opposed to compost, which decays in contact with air. The byproducts are methane gas for cooking and liquid fertilizer for gardening. It has the added advantage of accepting meat, bones and oils, which are not recommended for compost. By using composting and biodigesters, eliminating the use of non-recyclable plastics, and recycling other materials, there will be nothing left for the landfill.
