Partners
Urban Ecology Project helps foster communication between organizations so that we can educate homeowners and developers and provide referrals where appropriate. In areas where we have experience and expertise we partner with other experts, vendors and installers to design devices and systems for our clients.
Projects
Engineering projects have been implemented by the engineering team at PECK Civil, and Urban Lumber and the Biodigester projects have been implemented by the Urban Ecology Project. These are real world installations and harvesting that have been completed. Advocacy and Planning is also under way with respect to recycling.
Storm Water Cistern Installation
Benedict Canyon project: we collaborated with our partner, HeyTanks on a combined storm water and gray water capture system. We did the Storm Water Capture and HeyTanks did the Grey Water and integration. At Bel Air Road we designed a 30,000 gallon storm water system as mandated by the city of Los Angeles, which is being used for irrigating the landscape. Visit our PECK Architecture Structural Civil project page.
LUMBER HARVESTINg and FURNITURE MAKING
Urban Lumber represents a huge opportunity since the materials available through normal tree falls and tree removals can be valuable. We have been successful in gathering local oak, pine, and eucalyptus, milling the wood, and using it in furniture production. Having a large stock of lumber in storage, the Urban Ecology Project is now primarily involved in producing furniture and other wood designs from the lumber. In the future we may continue to forge relationships with Angel City Lumber, Street Tree Revival (West Coast Arborists), other tree cutting companies, arborists, portable tree milling contractors, and city Forestry Departments. The benefit to the owners and the tree cutting crews is that the heaviest and most cumbersome part of the tree hauling is taken care of by others at no cost. Our wood has been planked by hired contractors who mill the wood and we air dry it for up to three years until it is ready for use. Visit Formlab Design Studio and www.KEITAdesign.com to see examples of our designs. Also, check out our Formlab Design Studio Announcement. Also, check out our Formlab Design Studio Announcement.
Storm water INFILTRATIOn SYSTEMS
Since the State Mandated Storm water mitigation for residential project we have designed dozens of these infiltration systems. At the Evanston Inn we utilized a deep well infiltration system. Visit PECK project page. At the Whittier Penn Gardens we utilized a shallow EcoRain tank system. Visit PECK project page.
ADDRESSING THE RECYCLING CRISIS
BAN SUP (single use plastics) is is an ongoing lobbying/activism project spearheaded by Cheryl. After advocating for legislation, the CA state Senate and Assembly each passed bills to control the proliferation of single use plastics. Visit our Facebook page.
BIODIGESTER INSTALLATION
At our home we have completed our first biodigester installation. We primed it with 50 gallons of fresh horse manure and we are now cooking with gas.
DROUGHT TOLERANT / LOW WATER UsE LANDSCAPES
Working with Landscape design partners we have implemented drought tolerant landscape plans in Pasadena and Los Angeles.
